When it comes to dementia, there are certain things you can do to lower your chance of being diagnosed with it later in life.

While some of it is simply down to the genetic lottery, there are things you can eat, drink or not drink that can help you reduce your chances of developing the condition.

new study has found that diabetes, air pollution and alcohol consumption are seemingly the biggest risk factors when it comes to dementia.

New research, based on brain scans of nearly 40,000 adults, between ages 44 and 82, in Britain was published Wednesday in Nature Communications.

According to the Washington Post, diabetes, air pollution and alcohol consumption each has an effect that is about twice as much as the other leading risk factors.

Resarch found tha the next major risk factors are sleep, weight, smoking and blood pressure – with people who sleep less at increased risk to those who have a healthy sleep routine.

Being overweight puts you at an increase of several conditions, while there is of course extensive research that shows the damage smoking can do.

In conclusion, while some things will be out of your control, living an overall healthy and active lifestyle is the best way to reduce your chance of developing a number of conditions, dementia included.
